Diving on the wrecksite

ORP Groźny is one of the vessels that sank specifically for the purpose of teaching – in this case its main purpose was to train the navy scuba divers. This means that to this day the wreck is specifically adapted to the needs of divers. The wreck was cleaned of elements that would make it difficult to dive on the site. Approachable depth of 18m near the bottom and between 13 to 15 on the board of the ship make ORP Groźny an ideal place to start wreck diving or to polish up your basic diving skills.

The wreck lies on the keel. Its noteworthy points are: the quarterdeck, skylights on the stern and rails designed to deploy depth charges. There are no fishing nets on site.

The visibility is dependent on the season – it’s better to be prepared for low-visibility diving.

Story

A Soviet submarine chaser of the Bolszoj Ochotnik class, launched in 1951. Drafted into the Polish Navy as DS.-48 (pl: „Duży ścigacz” = Big chaser) In the following years the designation of the 52-meter ship was changed to “368”. After crossing the vessel off the navy listing in 1970 it was sunk in the following year as mentioned above.

Technical specifications

The ship had three 1100 hp engines which powered three shaft lines. It could spend 10 days on the sea without the need to resupply or refuel. During the duty years, Grozny had a multitude of armaments to combat submarines, including two depth charge chutes, four depth charge throwers and artillery weapons, in which multiple machine guns and 85mm cannon. The chaser could also carry and deploy up to 18 depth charges.
